THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED The Gumbo Bros Restaurant Review:
When LSU pals Adam Lathan and Clay Boulware couldn’t find authentic, soul-satisfying gumbo in New York City, they made their own, working with recipes passed down from Lathan’s great grandmother’s Alabama kitchen. The result is the tiny, charm-filled Gumbo Bros on Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill, which smells like something warm, rich and meaty is cooking --- because it is. Lathan prepares a rotating selection of Cajun as well as Creole takes on gumbo, sure to ignite the tomato-vs.-no-tomato argument. Turns out they’re both delicious, although Nanny’s Seafood Gumbo, made with fat Gulf shrimp and blue crab in a dark roux, is the winner, especially with a bag of Cajun potato chips and a cold beer. The Gumbo Bros’ Roast Beef with Debris Gravy is slow-cooked, super tender meat piled high on a fluffy yet chewy loaf, served in gravy full of bits of shredded beef "debris." Get your veggies in with a side of seasonal greens studded with ham hocks. Wash it all down with a New Orleans cold brew style chicory coffee and an Abita root beer float.
