Gunbarrel Tavern & Eatery Restaurant Review:

Local, seasonal ingredients punctuate the menu at hip Gunbarrel Tavern & Eatery in Heavenly Village. Named for the famed double-black-diamond mogul run at Heavenly Ski Resort, Gunbarrel is the creation of restaurateur Alex Cox and chef Billy McCullough, who also collaborate at 22 Bistro in the Village at Squaw Valley. Gunbarrel features creative, home-style takes on New American cuisine. The Tower 15 appetizer layers ahi, mango and wasabi whip cream between wonton chips (a dish brought over from 22 Bistro). PBR beer-can chicken with brown butter gravy is served with creamy mac ‘n’ cheese flecked with jalapeño and bacon; a juicy bison burger features one-third of a pound of Durham Ranch bison topped with California white cheddar and spicy mayo Gunbarrel sauce. Southern-style cheese grits with Mexican shrimp finished with a spicy fire-roasted corn salsa and tomato-bacon ragù doesn’t disappoint. After a day on the slopes, warm up with the Firing Squad blending tequila, melon liquor and a house-made roasted jalapeño and cilantro honey simple syrup.
