In L.A., there are sushi bars for all occasions, from ultra-luxe feasts to quick bites during shopping expeditions. Hanabi, just outside of the historic Macy’s on Pasadena’s South Lake Avenue, is among the latter. This cozy, contemporary-style eatery with flamboyant arrangements of bamboo and raspberry walls is a good place to order one of many sushi rolls, uni or oyster shooters, or respectable sushi or sashimi. Among specialties, the “albacore jungle” consists of two mountains of fried onions draped with thin slices of seared albacore drizzled with spicy garlic sauce. Also worth ordering: ahi sashimi in whole-grain mustard sauce. Most who come here opt for the well-priced lunch or dinner combination plates.
