The Hart & the Hunter Restaurant Review

: After a successful run operating a pop-up in Venice, chefs Kris Tominaga and Brian Dunsmoor launched this eclectic Southern restaurant inside the Palihotel, a hip boutique property on Melrose. A vintage d├ęcor welcomes guests --- a shabby-chic setting of tiled floors, cumbersome metal chairs, and mismatched plate ware. Outdoor dining is provided on a quaint woodsy patio. Small dishes feature the likes of boiled peanuts, chicken cracklins and killer butter biscuits. Potted items, served in Mason jars, may include an earthy mushroom duxelle spread spiked with garlic, enjoyable slathered on olive oil-soaked bread. Other shareable items include fried chicken livers that are as rich as one would expect, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, accompanied by a vibrant salad of arugula, radish, apple and hazelnuts. Fried green tomatoes are a little uninspired, a bit watery and with a coating that falls off easily. Pungent raclette cheese acts like a grown-up version of fondue, gracing soft bread and served with bright yellow butterball potatoes and cornichons. A hanger steak is topped with fried oysters, and sides like cheese grits continue the kitchen's frequent homage to the South. For dessert, we like the not-too-sweet coconut cake or the frosty lemon icebox cake with a thick layer of meringue. A concise wine list focuses on independent, hard-to-find labels from California.
