This clean and modern roost, ruled by neighborhood preppies, proffers spiffed-up bar snacks---and a few overwrought entrées.

For years this Beacon Hill pub was a rough-hewn destination for greasy pizza, watery beer, and scads of working-class charm. Now this clean and modern roost is ruled by nearby MGH employees and neighborhood preppies. The menu starts with bar snacks spiffed up beyond all recognition---think Brie-and-chutney “egg rolls”---and continues on with suspiciously sophisticated Contemporary creations: how often do you belly up to a bar with a hankering for vanilla-scented lobster bisque with scallion crêpes? Still, simpler stuff like spinach-artichoke dip go down easy or brunchtime pastrami hash with the usual slew of 'tinis. We’ve never been wowed but we also will not automatically bypass this laid-back haunt.
