Havana Alma de Cuba Restaurant Review: Set in a long, narrow space in the West Village, Havana Alma de Cuba boasts colorful murals and live (and fortunately not-so-loud) music. The endless procession of mojitos from the bar keeps the place lively and bustling. The menu doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel---and that’s a good thing. Classics like arroz con pollo criollo and vaca frita have a place, but the best bet here is anything from the sea: the calamares al grill, grilled baby squid, simmering in garlic and oil, is satisfying for its freshness as well as its balance of flavors; the plantain-encrusted filet of red snapper is flaky and tender---it's given a subtle punch with a splash of garlicky sofrito sauce. |
