Hawkers Restaurant is one of our 2012
Hot 10 Orlando Restaurants|
It’s an odd moniker, but Hawkers is named in honor of the food vendors who hawk their goods along the street in Asia. And it fits this venue in Orlando’s Little Vietnam neighborhood, with large-scale black-and-white photos of hawkers and their carts lining the walls. The modern, semi-industrial interior includes a trendy mix of high-top and low-top tables, corrugated steel and bright colors. The menu is a huge collection of casual fare from several Asian countries, from Taiwan to Vietnam to Korea. Nothing on the menu costs more than $6.50, and the small plates are designed for sharing. Portion sizes are fair for the price---each dish is enough for four people to nibble on (we recommend two dishes per person to share). Favorites include crisp tempura-fried green beans, pan-fried pork pot stickers, Chinese haw fun (beef stir fried with wide noodles), Malaysian char kway teo (noodles with chicken, shrimp and bean sprouts) and five-spice pork chopettes---little bites of fried pork tossed in a five-spice powder seasoning. A wide, interesting selection of beers is available, from classic Asian beers to microbrews from Brooklyn.
