Helmsman Ale House Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: This corner spot on Balboa Peninsula’s main drag adds to The Lounge Group’s prolific restaurant and bar portfolio, which also includes Newport-Mesa venues The Country Club, Playa Mesa and Wild Goose Tavern. Helmsman Ale House is a bit different from the area’s other casual beer-and-bite destinations. Bright and breezy with a relaxing outdoor patio, its earth-toned space creates a warm, inviting setting.

Likes: Great whiskey selection for a place that brews beer.
Dislikes: Main dining area feels a little tight.

Food & Drinks: While it’s a chill place to hang out and perhaps watch a game, the beer here is serious business. Most are brewed in-house, and there’s a wide range of styles. Head chef Zachary Scherer, who also oversees the Playa Mesa and The Country Club kitchens, takes a more casual approach to building the modern American menu. Start off with a generous bowl of house-pickled veggies or the crispy Brussels sprouts with honey sherry gastrique. Expect burgers and sandwiches along with substantial fare like Chicken & Waffles and ale battered Fish & Chips. Save room for s’mores pie. Brunch items such as chilaquiles and omelets are served on the weekend. Not in a beer mood? Belly up to the bar and explore the impressive whiskey collection.
