Dining room at Henry's Hat, Los Angeles, CAWith fourteen flat screen televisions and one 5-by-5-foot projection screen spread across three different areas, Henry’s Hat is definitely a sports bar where patrons come to enjoy the games along with good drinks and food. It’s not owner A.J. Gilbert’s first strike, as he is also the head of two busy Luna Park restaurants (in San Francisco and Los Angeles). Specialty cocktails, like the strawberry/basil gimlet made with fresh fruit, basil, lime and vodka, were created by Gilbert’s wife Martha Madison, who played Belle Black on “Days of Our Lives.” To start, there are very good house made tortilla chips to dip in molten cheese, salsa, black beans, chorizo, avocado and pico de gallo, and fried mozzarella cheese curds. The pizza is a must, due to its perfect crust. The pulled pork sandwich with horseradish cole slaw is a good alternative if you want a change from the burgers, which are all made with Meyer Ranch prime, natural beef. For something a little more sophisticated, we recommend the mussels, which chef Nick Cobarruvias cooks in pale ale, then adds bacon, fresh chiles, lime, cilantro, garlic and shallots to the broth. Other entrée options include a seven-cheese Mac’n’Cheese gratin, grilled salmon and achiote marinated chicken. Finish with the banana split, which is not too heavy for once. There is never a dull moment in this venue boasting a flea market-chic décor; in other words, it can get very noisy. So don’t come intending to carry on a full conversation, but rather to enjoy the action. If you are wondering, Henry is the name of the owners’ dog, and “hat” is to make the restaurant sound more masculine.
