| Barton Creek Resort & Spa is a quick drive from downtown Austin but feels worlds away due to its surroundings of golf courses and dramatically hilly vistas. Its expansive, upscale Hill Country Dining Room, which is open to club members and the public, draws families, business folks and intimate dinner guests with its polished service and tranquil view of the lush Fazio Foothills golf course and resort pool. Veteran executive chef Phil Bouza’s seasonally-changing American dishes look artistic and healthful but never fail to excite the palate. Some of the salads take liberties with convention, such as the baby green leaf Caesar with oven-dried tomatoes, garlic confit croutons, truffle aïoli and white anchovy vinaigrette. We believe the dinner entrée menu skirts the generic country-club image, even listing wine suggestions with each dish. Pecan- and bacon-crusted diver scallops are enlivened with black garlic and a pickled mustard seed emulsion, topped with onion marmalade. USDA Prime Midwestern steaks, including bone-in filet mignon and rib-eye, can be topped with your choice of five adornments, our favorites being the blue cheese crust or Oscar style. We’ve been tempted not to share the chocolate Kahlúa dream cake for two. Come back for lunch and enjoy the buffet, or hit Barton’s Lounge for the lively happy hour. |
