Hilo Bay Cafe Restaurant Review: Positioned as a healthy-gourmet bistro, Hilo Bay Cafe offers a menu that includes a tasty and filling Hamakua mushroom curry potpie served vegetarian style or with chicken or shrimp; and crab cakes with organic mixed greens, hearts of palm, cherry tomatoes, sweet chili aïoli, honey-sesame vinaigrette and wonton chips. Or pick up your chopsticks and dip into one of the sushi rolls. Consider a steak selection or the fresh-catch fish tacos comprising corn tortillas, Ka'u corn, lime, cilantro, lomi tomato-avocado relish, grilled scallion crema and purple sweet potato chips. Prices are relatively inexpensive given the venue’s location and view of Hilo Bay, and the kitchen’s use of organically grown, local produce and free-range, antibiotic-free meat. While not extensive, the wine list is carefully selected; a full bar and tropical specialty drinks are also available. Although children are welcome, the restaurant is oriented to a more mature crowd and a dining experience that invites lingering.
