The Westin Houston, Memorial City, set to open in April of this year, will be home to Il Mulino, a version of New York City's famed Il Mulino. The menu will feature diverse Italian fare and an extensive wine list, primarily from the Abruzzi region. The restaurant design will have an open kitchen and should be up and running this spring when the 267-room hotel debuts. Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen was meant to close for several months after the long-time site on West Gray closed just after New Year's Day while Mandola waited for his new site just down the street to be finished. But in a restaurant perfect storm, the owner of a strip center at 2810 Westheimer Rd. had a vacant restaurant and offered to lease it for the interim months. So, for the time being, fans of the River Oaks' Mandola's can get their fill of blackened snapper in lime butter and oysters on the half shell at the former site of Fins Seafood and Sushi. Landlord Bob Schultz says he's secretly hoping Mandola's might stay on Westheimer, but since Mandola has already bought the new site and almost finished construction, likely the only way that would happen would be if Houston gets two Gulf Coast Kitchens, which would hardly be a bad thing.
