The Return of Houston Restaurant Weeks Houston Restaurant Weeks, a month-long celebration of the city’s best eateries offering special meals benefitting the Houston Food Bank, is turning ten. This year's Restaurant Week dates are August 1 through September 2, during which time guests can can dine at participating eateries for $20 at lunch and $35 and $45 for dinner. A portion of the price goes straight to three area food banks. Last year, 169 restaurants participated, selling 235,000 meals and raising more than $1.22 million. It's the biggest fundraiser for the local food banks and the biggest fundraiser of its kind in the country. Check out www.HoustonRestaurantWeeks.com for a list of participating restaurants. Sugar Land Food & Wine Affair Breaks Records April’s five-day Sugar Land Food & Wine Affair set attendance records this year --- its tenth. “The continued growth has been phenomenal, and more importantly, the efforts in supporting the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston has been tremendous,” said Keri Schmidt, founder of the Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair and president of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. The event featured wine and spirits seminars hosted by award-winning chefs from across Texas, Louisiana, California, Kentucky and Maine, and a specially constructed Gallery Furniture Pavilion that hosted live cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs. Mark your calendar for next year’s event; the dates are April 23 through 27.
Learn to Cook with Chef Randy Evans Here’s your chance to cook with Haven’s chef Randy Evans. Evans is holding another of his popular cooking classes Sunday, June 23. This one is titled "Beef and Beer" and participants will create a three-course brunch paired with local beers. The chef will conduct the lesson and then join his guests to eat. There will be two seatings, one at 4 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. Space is limited and the classes sell out quickly; call 713-581-6101. Price is $60 per person. Sad news for fans of chef Riccardo Palazzo-Giorgio: Hawthorn has closed. The Upper Kirby restaurant with a 1930s superclub feel and a menu from Palazzo-Giorgio that won raves from critics and diners, has quietly shuttered. The chef posted the announcement on his Facebook page but reasons for the closing are unclear. Open just a year, this is the second time Palazzo-Giorgio has had to move on; In 2010, he opened his Sabetta but wound up closing that after just eight months.
