HOUSTON RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

When the longtime Cuban hole-in-the-wall Latina Cafe closed, hardly anyone thought it would be resurrected as a farm-to-fork restaurant. But that’s exactly what's happening as new chef/owner Kevin Naderi, who helped Randy Evans open Haven to great acclaim, is doing. The 25-year-old chef hopes to have Roost up and running in early December, transforming the former home of cheap Cuban sandwiches into a place where folks can dine on locally sourced meals for $20 and under. Roost will seat 50, and Naderi’s menu will boast 16 items culled from Asia, France, Persia and the Southern U.S. Roost will offer beer, wine and wine cocktails. Roost, 1972 Fairview St., Houston, TX 77019, no phone.

Kata Robata Sushi + Grill Hosts Umami Dinners
Umami is what Kata Robata Sushi + Grill’s December tasting dinners are all about. That savory fifth taste will define the December 4 and 18 dinners created by executive chef Manabu “Hori” Horiuchi, chef de cuisine Mark Gabriel Medina, and mixologist David Long Wong, along with guest chefs Randy Rucker and Chris Leung of the soon-to-open Conat. The chefs will prepare courses based on their own culinary styles using Japanese and exotic ingredients. The December 4 Umami Dinner is $125 per person while the December 18 meal is $225 per person, including wine, cocktail and sake pairings. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call Kata Robata at 713-526-8858 to make a reservation. Kata Robata Sushi + Grill, 3600 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77098, 713-526-8858.

Turkey Time at Berryhill’s
Tamales are a Texas holiday tradition, and once again, Berryhill’s Hot Tamales is offering its signature seasonal tamales of roast turkey at all Houston locations. Last year the company sold 35,000 turkey tamales between the week before Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. That’s 8,000 a week. For the last decade, Houstonians have been picking them up for family dinners and holiday parties. The turkey treats are $14.99 per dozen or $9.99 per half dozen, and the company suggests you order early. Berryhill’s also has a pumpkin tres leches cake on the menu during the holidays. Berryhill's Hot Tamales, 2639 Revere St., Houston, TX 77098, 713-526-8080.
