Nestled quite comfortably in the revamped Hotel 71, this sun-drenched New American is decked in modern, creamy leather and dark wood seating and hip glass pendant lighting, with gracious sidewalk and Chicago River views. The menu is rooted in familiar ingredients, with just enough variation to feel fresh. Punchy flavors --- like those found in the spiced coppa with pickled mushrooms and pleasant cheese toasts --- bode well. Maybe start with the deconstructed deep-fried deviled eggs, making a detour to roasted whitefish with tomatoes, fennel and fingerling potatoes or butternut squash ravioli in brown butter with shaved Parmesan and sage. Then again, you could always go straight for decadent jarred chocolate pudding, which is yet another example of its catch-all appeal. Craft cocktails, like the vodka-soaked Moscow Mule with lime and ginger ale, are happy hour enticements. That’s especially true since there are after-work food and drink specials, perfect for enjoying on the comfortable-chic sidewalk patio.
