Hungry Tarpon Restaurant Review: It looks like a simple, concrete-block building (it is), but this restaurant has been an important destination since 1976. What opened as a casual breakfast-lunch stop evolved into as fancy a restaurant as it gets in these parts, with a notable wine list, too. Though the longstanding, fine dining chef has now departed, his signature dishes still welcome return guests, like the fresh fish chowder, the five-pepper dip (Homestead, Florida, peppers, herbs and spices, with chips for dipping) and the seafood Cardinal (simmered in brandy lobster cream sauce, served over pasta). Otherwise, it’s island flavors galore here, from an appetizer of sautéed shrimp with papaya salsa to mahi filets served with ripe plantains, and snapper in Key lime parsley butter. Anyone hankering for a steak will find plenty to choose from as well, including filet a la Annie in red wine demi-glace. Work off a slice of coconut-banana cream pie with a stroll down the pier to watch the tarpon roll and shimmer. |
