Hy's Encore Restaurant Review: Known by locals interchangeably as Hy's or The Encore, this spot is a meat lovers' institution. Opened by cigar-chomping Hy Aisenstat in 1963, the restaurant still holds sway more than 50 years later. It’s now operated by Aisenstat's sons who live by Hy's motto “Times change, classics don't,” which has never rung truer. Its location in the heart of the financial district and steps from top hotels ensures a buzz from lunch to late. On entering this richly appointed, wood-paneled, clubby space, you're greeted by views of a massive, brightly glowing charcoal-fired grill. It's here that steaks (28-day aged Canadian prime beef) have been grilled over the decades. But Hy's isn't all about steaks as there are also fresh seafood options. Must-order enduring classic dishes include savory, addictive cheese toast, the prawn cocktail and oysters Rockefeller. Steaks rule from New York strip to porterhouse, filet mignon and bone-in rib, to house specialties such as Steak Neptune and Gorgonzola Filet Mignon. For dessert, bananas Foster is prepared and flamed tableside, and the apple crumble and creamy berry-topped cheesecake are sizable and easily shared. The expertly chosen wine list is dominated by U.S. selections (hello, California Cab) and complemented by some of British Columbia's best vintages, along with treats from other parts of the globe. Service is polished and professional.
