Hy's Encore Restaurant Review: Hy's, or The Encore as it's known by locals, is a meat lovers' institution. Opened in 1963 by cigar-chomping Hy Aisenstat, and now operated by Aisenstat's sons, the restaurant still holds sway more than 50 years later. Located in the heart of the financial district and steps from top hotels, the place buzzes from lunch to late. A massive, brightly glowing charcoal-fired grill dominates the richly appointed, wood-paneled, clubby space where steaks --- 28-day aged Canadian prime beef --- have been cooked over the decades. But Hy's isn't all about steaks. There are also fresh seafood options such as Alaska king crab legs and jumbo Atlantic lobster tail. Must-order items include the addictive cheese toast, the wedge salad, prawn cocktail, and oysters Rockefeller. From the New York strip to porterhouse, filet mignon and bone-in rib, to house specialties such as Steak Neptune and Châteaubriand, steaks all are properly cooked. Dessert offers classics as well: bananas Foster is prepared and flamed tableside, and the creamy, berry-topped cheesecake is sizable and easily shared. The expertly chosen wine list is dominated by U.S. selections and complemented by some of British Columbia's best vintages, along with treats from other parts of the globe. Newly refurbed, the upstairs Hornby Room, complete with private bar, sets the scene for sophisticated soirées. Service is polished and professional.
