| Although part of a California chain, Seattle's Il Fornaio has a distinct personality and offers authentic Italian cuisine in either a formal or casual setting. Located in the upscale Pacific Place shopping galleria, it's an ideal destination before the movies, or after a long day of shopping. Il Forniao’s elegant and spacious upstairs dining room features high ceilings, imposing murals, and an elegant bar. To get there, walk through a casual, booth-lined foyer with a view of the kitchen and a vast wood-burning hearth warming a rotisserie laden with chickens. For casual diners, a spiral staircase leads down to a street-level bakery, café and risotteria. Dine here on crisp, cracker-thin crusted pizzas, pastas and salads. Risotto, made to order, arrives firmly textured and creamy, perhaps with saffron and asparagus or studded with rock shrimp. In the upstairs dining room, the menu is more sophisticated, ambitious and expensive; the roast chicken is moist and scented with rosemary, while a wood-fire grills tuna. Other top choices are veal scaloppine drizzled with truffle oil or multi-layered lasagna. Desserts leave something to be desired, but we're usually feeling too well-fed to order one. |
