| The former great hall in the community house at St. Bart's Church is an oddball choice for a fine dining restaurant, yet it works in its own quirky way. Surrounded by historical photos of the church arranged chronologically, diners are treated to Matthew Weingarten’s takes on Italian, Mediterranean and Eastern European cuisines done up “green market style” with his own twists. Traditional formaggio in carroza become "Sage and Hooligan Taxis," lightly breaded cheese served en casserole. Vinegary seasonal vegetables are presented as a starter to the East Coast oyster pan-roast, served in the oysters’ own shells instead of swimming in a pool of paprika-laced cream. A selection of homemade charcuterie plus a topnotch grass-fed rib-eye, with a nicely charred crust, should not be missed. Vegetarian dishes such as hen-of-the-woods mushrooms served atop polenta are also offered. Apple strudel with walnuts and cream, mulberry and pecan bread pudding, and an airy lavender goat cheese soufflé with a Concord grape velouté set the standard during autumn. |
