Iron Barley, St. Louis, MO

Iron Barley Restaurant Review

: For more than a decade, proprietor Tom Coghill has been surprising newcomers with sammiches and blaster pies (a frozen cheesecake-ice cream available in various styles, all involving a little spicy-hot flavor to offset the sweet). The touches of too-cuteness in the names are easily forgiven with the first bite of the nicely smoky oak-roasted pork chops. One of the signature dishes is schnitzel and spätzle, breaded pork cutlets in white wine sauce alongside homemade dumpling noodles. We get why it's so popular. What's more, the eponymous barley isn't just some wise guy's joke; it's available as a side or as apple-studded barley pudding for dessert, the latter a nice riff on rice pudding. Local craft beers are the drink of choice for most locals in this neighborhood, and the zippier ales pair well with Coghill’s rich dishes.

GAYOT's Annual Restaurant Awards honor America's best chefs, as well as promising newcomers and a top restaurateur.
