With its convenient location blocks away from the ballpark, Ironside keeps Giants fans fortified with hearty, beer-friendly fare through baseball season and beyond. Pizzas, burgers, steaks and fried nibbles suit the sport as well as the setting---red brick walls, a shiny metal kitchen and austere wooden tables. To start, feast on slices of ripe avocado encased in wispy husks of tempura batter with lime-spiked sweet chili salt and aïoli---an opulent concoction ideal for soaking up a few too many IPAs. But when the real hunger hits, stick to the basics at this laid-back joint: pizzas, soups, salads, and pressed sandwiches are ordinary yet deeply satisfying. Innovative dishes tend to disappoint. Desserts are balanced: an heirloom apple tart looks like a wreath and tastes of fall. A spiky, personal pan-size ring of chewy crust topped with a ball of crème fraîche ice cream, salted thyme and caramel sauce is a small revelation. Try Ironside during the day, too, when friendly baristas make coffee drinks and dispense cookies to cure the mid-afternoon slump.
