THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Itana Bahia Restaurant Review

: Diners at this colorful place can request tables not by their location but by postcard images of one of the 16 orixas (or spirits). The room is a repository of musical instruments and other symbols from Salvador da Bahia, the colonial city that has a unique Afro-Brazilian culture and produces sensational food and music. Specialties such as vatapá (fresh seafood in a sauce of manioc flour), moqueca (a stew of shrimp, fish or lobster in coconut milk), xinxim de galinha (chicken with garlic, sun-dried shrimp, cashew nuts with dende oil) and bacalhau de iaia (fresh cod)---all of which are seldom found outside Bahia---are intensely flavorful. Other choices include six unique dinner salads. For dessert, the coconut flan goes well with a strong cup of Brazilian coffee.
