| The first foray into the restaurant business for Patricia Quintana, teacher and author of over a dozen cookbooks, Izote attempts to add some “nouvelle” twists to some of Mexico’s most traditional cookery. Mexico’s most famous TV stars, newscasters, and even Gabriel García Márquez have eaten here. Among Izote’s best dishes are cebiche margarita (raw scallops with soy sauce, chile de arbol and Seville oranges), lamb steamed in banana leaves with three sauces, and the fish of the day with cuitlacoche (corn fungus, aka the Aztec truffle) and an infusion of saffron cream. The lighting is on the bright side, and given the walls (white tile with an indigenous motif), it’s a bit like eating in a Mexican swimming pool. The bar offers exotic cocktails, tequilas and mezcals, as well as a good selection of wines, including some of the best from the Baja California region of Mexico. |
