J. Buck’s is now in its second decade, and it's still popular with the Clayton crowd, meaning young and semi-young professionals. Also in attendance are athletes, both local and visiting, and diners of all ages in smart-casual attire. There's a legacy at play here: the place is named for late St. Louis sports-casting legend Jack Buck, as well as his offspring Julie, a local radio personality, and Joe, who has a fine national reputation of his own in his dad's field. The younger two are also part-owners in this and the downtown location. The menu concentrates on salads, sandwiches, pizza and protein of the steak-fish persuasion. Look for this twist: toasted ravioli as a pizza topping. The don't-miss dish, though, is Buck's cheesecake, where the cheesecake is sandwiched between layers of dark chocolate cake. Portions, even for a St. Louis restaurant, are immense, with plates filled with food instead of froufrou. The updated wine list is an improvement, and service is pleasant. Also located downtown at 1000 Clark St., 314-436-0394.

Bad business - do not eat here
by mgraham on 11/23/2010

After having an expensive meal including wine and appetizers, the waiter took our $100 gift card. A manager returned and told us they no longer accepted that gift card as they had been sold to new owners. She informed us their was nothing they could do and she needed another form of payment. She did not offer to take the wine or appetizers off our bill. We would not have ordered all of this but wanted to use up the gift card.

There is nothing outstanding about this restaraunt and I cannot believe the Bucks would want their name :) with someone who has such bad business practices!

Disappointing and gift certificate not honored
by stacy4416 on 10/24/2009

Just dined at the J Bucks Clayton location. Had a gift card for $35 which I had NO idea was no longer honored until the check came. There was no sign at the door and I was not aware that the restaurant had been sold to new owners. Very disappointing and I cannot believe that the Buck family didn't already make their money on the gift cards that were sold.
