Jake's & Cooper's Wine Bar Restaurant Review: Bruce Cooper was one of the pioneers who some 25 years ago helped elevate Manayunk from dying mill town to chic destination. Jake's set a high bar with its first-rate wine list and well-executed contemporary American cooking. Recognizing the trend towards more casual fine dining, Cooper has combined Jake's with its more casual sibling, Cooper's. The all-day menu takes a best-of-both approach, by offering a range of pizzas, sandwiches and salads, as well as more complex large plates. The latter includes grilled calf’s liver with apple potato hash, smoked bacon, asparagus and onion jam in a red wine demi-glace, and jumbo lump crab cakes with spaghetti squash, roasted-tomato butter sauce and tomato vinaigrette. Pastry chef Debbie Tonsey's creations include a house-made ice cream sampler --- which might include such flavors as brown butter maple pecan, chocolate covered pretzel, bittersweet chocolate and brownie caramel --- or an almond cake with honey-cassis sauce. A four-selection cheese plate is available for those who like to end the meal on a savory note.
