Tourists and locals alike flock to Jake's, one of Portland's most beloved destinations. Established in 1892, it has a patina of burnished woods, deep colors, and polished age befitting a restaurant that's well into its second century. The servers are among the surest and the service among the crispest in town. Jake's fresh sheet offers an astonishingly varied list of fish and seafood---and it changes daily. The restaurant was founded to showcase crayfish and still prides itself on those tasty crustaceans, but that is merely the beginning. Our impulse is usually to select the simplest preparations---good fresh oysters on the half-shell, grilled or broiled regional fish---always allowing room for the chocolate truffle cake or, during summer, the three-berry cobbler. Be forewarned: You may have to wait to be seated even with a reservation. It’s not a tourist trap, but it’s a favorite spot for out-of-towners. |
