Established in 1892, Jake’s has a patina of burnished woods, deep colors, and polished panache befitting a restaurant that's well into its second century. Oversize booths and cozy tables are scattered throughout several rooms, making this the rare restaurant that manages to feel both spacious and intimate. Jake's fresh sheet offers a varied list of fish and seafood---with more than 30 changing selections flown in daily. The restaurant was founded to showcase crayfish and still prides itself on these tasty crustaceans, but that is just the beginning. Our impulse is usually to select the simplest preparations---good fresh oysters on the half-shell, grilled or broiled regional fish---always allowing room for the chocolate truffle cake or, during summer, the three-berry cobbler. You may have to wait to be seated even with a reservation, but there's a full bar (the happy hour menu is legendary) and extensive wine list to help speed the time. While it’s not a tourist trap, it is a favorite spot for out-of-towners. The servers are among the surest and the service among the crispest in town.
