Bruce Cooper was one of the pioneers who elevated Manayunk from dying-old-town to chic destination. His restaurant is known for its first-rate wine list, a good complement for the fine contemporary American cooking served here. The menu offers both adjacent Cooper's more casual (and almost always good) pizza and sandwiches, along with salads like the Cavendish quail breasts over mâche with mango and avocado. Large plates might be a platter of tender calf’s liver spiked with smoky bacon, or a duo of crab cakes served with a lemon beurre blanc. Vegetables, such as stir-fries or fried yams, or the lobster mashed potatoes, are interesting and receive the same attention as the entrées. Desserts from pastry chef Debbie Tonsey are as beguiling as the rest of the menu. Consider these temptations: a signature cookie taco with ice cream, caramel and raspberry sauce, and warm chocolate bread pudding with Tahitian vanilla sauce. A four-selection cheese plate is available for those who like to end the meal on a savory note.
