Japanese Kitchen is really two restaurants in one: a teppanyaki place and a separate, quieter and more sophisticated sushi bar situated in a business tower across the plaza. The main restaurant is fun if you place entertainment value on having your food cooked right on the table in front of you; for vegetarians, that’s a big if, since only one of seventeen entrées is meatless. As for omnivores, the remaining steak, chicken and seafood combos are no better or worse than they were when Japanese steakhouses hit big in the 1970s; same goes for the fried ice cream afterward. But a charmingly goofy array of tropical cocktails complete with little paper umbrellas brightens the big picture. The sushi satellite, meanwhile, is passable; if you’ve had a lifetime’s fill of spicy tuna rolls, the bar offers omakase (essentially chef’s whim) for two, starting at $30---an unheard-of bargain by big-city standards.
