THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Japengo Restaurant Review

: This dramatic Japanese-style 116-seat restaurant, a sister to Japengo in La Jolla, California, brings all the interesting flavors and spices of the Pacific Rim to the desert. Its 10-seat sushi bar is a popular gathering spot. From the dining room, guests can watch chefs in the open kitchen prepare dishes with flair. Among appetizer specialties are a seared ahi napoleon with avocado and wasabi aïoli, and a scallop and crab cake with five spice apple chutney and micro greens. Try the Long Island duck salad with baby spinach, candied pecans and pomegranate vinaigrette. Tamarind-spiced chicken is stuffed with glass noodles and woodear mushrooms served with wild rice. The blending of cuisines also shows in such dishes as teriyaki-glazed salmon with wasabi potato latkes, and seared pork tenderloin with wild mushrooms and Asian pear-Asahi beer reduction. From the wok are creative fried rice, chicken, seafood and beef dishes. Worth the splurge is the New York Kobe steak with shiitake mushrooms and garlic mashed potatoes. There's an extensive selection of wines by the glass. Whether you choose a fiery hot or mild dish, a great way to end the meal is the smooth crème brûlée.
