Japonessa Sushi Cocina Restaurant Review: Although the restaurant’s name may suggest Japanese-Spanish fusion cooking, this trendy place actually offers modern Japanese fare with a few Spanish accents. Imagine a yellowtail roll highlighted with pico de gallo, or octopus seasoned with cilantro oil and a roasted tomato-lime mignonette. Japonessa has a modern, sexy glow, with its black ceilings, chunky chandeliers and eclectic mirrors, and an almost all-day happy hour. For a close look at how the sushi rolls come together, sit at the sleek sushi bar. In the dining room, enjoy sushi rolls or stir-fried noodles packed with vegetables and your choice of salmon, chicken or portobello mushrooms. Signature rolls from the regular sushi menu bring together creative ingredients, such as spicy filet mignon drizzled with a jalapeño garlic la-yu sauce. From the happy hour menu, we suggest the super bad boy roll and the spicy crunch roll. Capable bartenders do justice to the full bar with its ample offerings of Northwest wine and beer, plus a good selection of saké, but we recommend one of the creative cocktails.
