| Jarra’s takes much of the credit for introducing Portland residents to Ethiopian cuisine, a relationship that has solidified over its years of serving spicy stews scooped up with spongy injera flatbread. Popular with budget-minded patrons and college students seeking an exotic, affordable dining adventure, Jarra’s able chefs produce deeply satisfying wats, or stews, brimming with spices and made with a variety of tender meats. Vegetarians can enjoy lentil dishes in mild or hot sauces. There are combination plates as well, and every dish comes with eyeb (cottage cheese) to refresh and remind your tongue of the meaning of "cool." The service at this family-run spot is notoriously slow --- though friendly --- so arrive with patience and know the food is worth the wait. The downstairs Lagano Lounge offers the same menu in a low-brow cocktail bar. |
