As its name suggests, this restaurant is a stone’s throw from the iconic Orange Circle that anchors the city of Orange’s popular Old Town section. The venue’s moniker refers to owner/chef Jason Kordas, a veteran OC caterer whose former eatery, Jason’s Downtown, gave foodies a reason to drop by downtown Santa Ana before the hipsters came. The stark black-and-white color scheme, dim lighting and diner-esque seating doesn’t evoke the sleek metropolitan vibe of his former place, but he more than makes up for this aesthetic by creating an intriguing menu deeply inspired by his own worldly excursions. You can kick off your meal Caribbean-style with the addictive bacon-wrapped, spiced rum maple-glazed plantain hunks dubbed Monkey Bites, head to the Far East with Szechuan peppercorn teriyaki-glazed kalbi beef skewers, or indulge in a traditional Spanish frittata. The global possibilities are equally as strong through the mains, and dishes ranging from shepherd’s pie and Moroccan bastilla to pan-seared basa white fish and ropa vieja are deftly composed with proper care and ideal flavors. Sticky pudding is a must-order for dessert, and can be paired with a dessert cocktail prepared at the cozy bar.
