| Our favorite Indian restaurant in town, Jewel of India serves familiar dishes such as jheega pakora (shrimp fried in a spiced chickpea batter) and vegetable korma (a medley of vegetables in a sweet coconut curry sauce) in an elegant setting. For the less adventurous, the chicken or lamb from the tandoor is spot-on, but we tend to order family-style to get the largest variety of flavors. Everyone should start with one (or several) of its Indian breads; the puri (puffed, salty bread) and the naan (flatter and doughy) are favorites. Keep some around for dipping during dinner. Other appetizers to sample: the vegetable-stuffed samosas or the pappadum (wafers made from lentils). Service can be slow at this family-run restaurant, but order a Kingfisher beer and enjoy the pace. Once your food arrives, it will go down fast. Don’t forget dessert; try the Indian ice cream. |
