Jimmy's Famous American Tavern Restaurant Review:

After spending a few years in San Diego, restaurateur David Wilhelm returned to Orange County, where he built a devoted following spanning more than two decades. However, those familiar with Wilhelm’s past endeavors will see his softer side at this venue ensconced in the Dana Point harbor. The spacious restaurant juxtaposes floor-to-ceiling windows with warm woods and a vibrant living wall that fills the room with a lodge-like vibe. The resulting ambience works keenly with the nice list of libations, as well as the kitchen’s take on American comfort food. Be warned: The menu's proclamation to "come hungry" is not hyperbole. Start with a plate of calamari served with rosemary and serrano chile, or opt for the fire-grilled flatbread with pear, black fig jam, arugula, prosciutto and blue cheese. Mains feature beef, poultry and seafood dishes that are generous and balanced, highlighted by buttermilk fried chicken with mashed red potatoes and thyme gravy and the barbecue spice-crusted salmon with creamed corn and pecanwood smoked bacon. The compact dessert menu lists endings such as dark chocolate pot de crème with house-whipped cream. The lunch crowd can come in from the docks to choose from a bevy of big burgers, sandwiches and salads, while weekend warriors can enjoy brunch dishes like a fried chicken Benedict.
