Jimmy's Famous American Tavern Restaurant Review: Former punk rocker and Guttermouth drummer James Nunn is the force behind Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern, channeling his other great passion, food, into a lively gastropub. After a decade on tour, Nunn worked at Hollywood’s Pig ’n Whistle, then jumped to Laguna Beach’s French 75, before taking the reins at this hoppin’ joint in Point Loma. Yachties and locals alike will go for the old-school cocktails like the Bees Knees melding gin with fresh lemon and house-made clover honey syrup. While a few salads and lighter fish dishes can be found, it’s hearty comfort and bar food that punctuates the menu: giant buttermilk- and dark beer-battered onion rings, Southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and Zinfandel-braised ribs. The one dessert is a crowd pleaser: warm chocolate chip cookies smothered in vanilla bean ice cream and hot fudge. Brunch calls for Benedicts, bananas Foster french toast, and the JFAT Famous Bloody Mary with a pepperoni-wrapped blue cheese-stuffed olive and a beer chaser to boot. An outdoor fire pit overlooks the marina and beckons as a pleasant spot for social gatherings. The bar scene inside is lively and fun with upbeat music.
