This old-stager in Covent Garden just goes on doing what it does very well. Difficult to find via a rather dingy door in a Covent Garden back street, you descend into a heaving mass of people, reveling in the brick-walled, rabbit warren space with its wooden tables and chairs, photographs of thespians on the walls and a pianist in the evenings. Real live thespians---both established and budding---make up quite a lot of the clientele who tuck into standards like warm black pudding with poached egg and hollandaise sauce, followed by salmon with braised cabbage and dill and orange butter sauce. But the cooking is pretty standard, so it’s best to stick to what they do well: steak and chips and grilled lamb cutlets. Joe Allen remains fun. Set weekday lunch and pre-theatre 2 courses £16, 3 courses £18; set brunch Sat.-Sun. 2 courses £19.50, 3 courses £21.50.
