Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House Restaurant Review:

Named for Joe Fortes, a much-loved Vancouver lifeguard during the late 1800s, this popular downtown spot specializes in classic American-style cooking. A bustling horseshoe-shaped bar, anchored by a large oyster station, is the focal point of the main dining room. Settle in at a table up front for the best in people-watching, tuck into a booth for prime views of the talented oyster shuckers, or head upstairs to the mezzanine to scope out the entire room. Not to be missed is the rooftop deck, one of the prettiest in town, complete with an outdoor fireplace. Start your meal with Joe's seafood tower, a stack piled high with lobster, oysters, clams, mussels, scallop ceviche, albacore tuna crudo and chilled jumbo prawns, or go old-school with a chopped salad. Popular mains include a Surf & Turf Platter for Two with New York steak, lobster, snow crab, and jumbo scallops and prawns; a 12-ounce center-cut pork chop with soy-citrus marinade and buttermilk-mashed potatoes. There's always room for dessert, especially if it's Joe's Chocolate Sin Cake with ganache, brandy and chocolate brittle. Alternatively, choose the three-course dinner deal that might include Joe's classic Caesar salad, a seven-ounce sirloin steak with sautéed mushrooms and green peppercorn sauce, and tiramisu. Servers are well-versed in the deep American-focused wine list.
