| This cozy, 30-seat nook, with its big wood bar and high barstools, fits in nicely with a stretch of East First Street that’s somewhat of a comfort-food row. The menu covers a lot of ground, and despite the international influences, is essentially contemporary American fare viewed through the prism of the eatery’s Lower East Side location. Complementing summery cocktails like cherries and rye and a Meyer lemon rickey are topnotch appetizers. Bacon and eggs JoeDoe style? It’s a slice of pork belly with fried egg and fried wonton on top. The scallop appetizer, meanwhile, is paired with kaffir lime and mayonnaise. The menu has a slightly Jewish lilt, too, as with the beef and tongue combo. There are also cheeky items, such as a faux Irish cod with cabbage and "bacon-ale" broth. The kitchen isn’t aiming for the culinary stratosphere, but for a neighborhood staple, JoeDoe’s take on this type of food is an enjoyable one, especially when you can top it off with a plate of milk and cookies. |
