 Local products like Ojai olive oil and lemons from Santa Paula make their way into many dishes at this downtown Ventura restaurant, as do a few more exotic ingredients. You might even find a Moroccan penne tossed with smoked chicken and finished with a spiced tomato curry sauce. Cioppino brims with fresh local seafood and gets an added kick from a pinch of saffron. If it’s available, don’t pass up the bolognese sauce made with Kobe-style beef and Kurobuta pork. The rustic surroundings began life in 1877 as the Peirano Italian Grocery. Weather permitting, the outdoor patio overlooking Figueroa Plaza with its fountain and adjacent park is decidedly pleasant. A wine room in the back of the restaurant can be booked for private parties. It holds bottles from California, Italy, Spain, Argentina and New Zealand. By the glass, a number of interesting varietals can be enjoyed, like Syrah, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio. The list of half and full bottles is quite long. Martinis and tapas from J’s Tapas Bar next door are available as well.
