The individual light dimmers and tile-covered roofs on the private booths that were left over from this restaurant’s days as an Italian eatery, still work at Julie Mai’s French-Vietnamese restaurant. Grab a booth, dim the lights, order some wine. Nibble some of Julie’s charbroiled shrimp wraps or share a crispy Vietnamese pancake amply big enough for two, and you’ve got the start of a romantic evening. Skip the French dishes on the menu; nicoise salad and broiled chicken breast seem ho-hum compared to options like lemon grass chicken, chewy pan fried noodles, papaya salad and hot and sour seafood soup (served in a Mongolian hot pot.) Special dinner combinations for parties of two or more offer crowd-pleasing menu options from egg rolls through to almond cookies and tea. After 10 p.m., stop in for late night appetizers and drinks. If your sweet tooth is nagging, bananas fried with coconut milk and roasted peanuts is a must.
