: From the amber glassware and plaid upholstery to the Tom Selleck photos in the ladies room, the eighties are back at Kevin Sbraga’s convivial eatery. Yet while the décor playfully nods to the past, the effect is anything but kitschy. Tableside service for crisp and briny Caesar salad; salmon with mustard cream sauce and three bean salad; and rich French onion soup in classic earthenware crocks transcend any lingering stereotypes of the era with concentrated flavor updates. Meanwhile, an individual “salad bar” and deconstructed corned beef special cleverly improve upon their predecessors. In other areas the Sunday dinner-with-grandma fare (prime rib, crab cakes, manicotti) hews a bit too closely to the memory, though their simplicity is comforting. The gin-heavy cocktail list updates Sex on the Beach with Death’s Door gin for Sand in Your Shorts, and Sea Breeze with Bluecoat and rose for the Point Breeze. Add to that a swirl of homemade wine coolers, timeless desserts like chocolate layer cake and cheesecake, and a kicky New Wave soundtrack.
