This handsome sushi bar in Culver City---its name refers to Culver City’s sister city, near Osaka---features a menu that extends beyond the predictable sushi rolls that have been overdone in L.A. In addition, many of the offerings are quite artistically presented, making a meal here an interesting experience. Thinly sliced halibut carpaccio is drizzled with a yuzu-infused ponzu sauced and sprinkled with pink peppercorns, while two rich items, ankimo (monkfish liver) and uni, are lightened with citrus sauce. Mango adds color and dimension to tuna tartare, and a wine reduction bathes asparagus spears wrapped in beef. A wide selection of rolls is available, of course, and non-sushi eaters can gravitate toward marinated short ribs, teriyaki and tempura plates. The kitchen emphasizes light, healthy cooking, and the dining room is a contemporary, Zen-like environment.
