Japan’s Kansai region is known for its robust noodle dishes, and you should try them at this unassuming establishment that’s ideal for a quick Japanese snack or a kaiseki feast (a series of small dishes). Appetizers of fried aji fish, gyoza (dumplings), octopus-stuffed wheat balls and ika somen (raw squid in ginger sauce) are consistent winners and attractively presented. Noodle nuts will love the bowls of udon and soba (hot or cold); the broths include curry, vegetable and chicken, and the numerous toppings include tempura, mushrooms, fish cakes, tempura chips. There’s almost nothing on the menu over $10. The décor may be minimal but elegant, with small art objects, painted fans, pottery and dried flowers.
