Karyn Calabrese has made quite a name for herself in the genre of raw and vegan cuisine (her location on North Halsted does raw, and she opened Karyn’s on Green, a Greektown venture serving vegan takes on beloved dishes). Here, as the name implies, she is putting heat to the food. Nevertheless, we are still in vegan country, and meat- and dairy-free comfort foods are squarely the focus. Tofu, soy and seitan are used with abandon up and down the menu, and in general it's all pulled off nicely. The chili is spicy and rousing; so is the spicy lentil meatball in marinara on a toasted wheat bun. Expect lots of grilled vegetable dishes as well as a wide range of sides (greens, broccoli, avocado, beans and rice). There are salads, too, and faux ribs, fajitas, and spaghetti and non-meatballs. Frankly, we would show up just to have the peach or apple cobbler or the Key lime pie.
