THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Katsuya by Starck Laguna Beach Restaurant Review:
Master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi and renowned designer Philippe Starck have brought their Los Angeles-based dining concept to the laid-back bustle of Laguna Beach. The design element that flows through the elevated space simultaneously captures a sleek, chic side of Laguna that will delight the area’s high-powered elite while also maintaining a relaxed accessibility that those not among the jet set will find comfortable. Uechi’s menu features a wealth of sushi and sashimi offerings, ranging from yellowtail and tuna to eel and octopus, but it also extends well beyond these items. Crispy rice with spicy tuna and crispy, creamy rock shrimp are starters that pair well with a selection from the wine or saké list. Flaky, buttery miso-marinated black cod is a must-try, while the Kobe rib-eye topped with maitake mushrooms and truffle butter proves the kitchen’s skill transcends the world of fish. Those unsure about diving into sushi will be interested in the robata dishes, including the Prime New York steak, Jidori chicken breast, and scallops doused with garlic soy butter. Hot chocolate “lover” cake, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, provides a fittingly sweet coda to the meal.
