La Famiglia means “the family,” but don’t confuse this sophisticated eatery with one of those places where every dish is blanketed in the same familiar red sauce, and no one turns a hair if the baby throws her spaghetti on the floor. This is, indeed, classic Northern Italian cooking “like Mama used to make,” if Mama had heaps of talent and perhaps a culinary school degree. The dining room has something of the mid-century swank appeal of former tenant Brasserie Tatin, with its banquettes and stone fireplace, but the space has been warmed up with Mediterranean colors and a painting of the Tuscan countryside. The food has a warmth to match, especially in such dishes as the earthy beef tenderloin with Barolo wine sauce and wild mushrooms, and the rich seafood risotto. The full dessert repertoire, including a gelato of the day, is served, and an extensive wine list includes premium-priced Italians personally selected by the owner. On a Friday or Saturday evening in summertime, take a seat on the private terrace and dream of Tuscany, in the heart of the Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood.
