Kerry Simon, the "Rock n' Roll Chef" behind SIMON L.A. at the Sofitel Los Angeles, has made his way downtown with this all-day-dining restaurant in the massive JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles at L.A. Live. Guests can choose to dine in the open area near the lobby, at a communal table crafted from a single massive maple tree, at a sleek granite burrata bar, or in the more private rear dining room. LA Market attracts a cosmopolitan crowd, but Simon's menu doesn't aspire to pretensions---he offers dishes featuring farmers market ingredients and comfort food classics like meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Global flavors come into play on the menu as well, from starters such as fried calamari with ponzu sauce to mains like the lamb tagine with couscous and cucumber yogurt. We recommend the burrata, made locally, offered with pesto, beets and roasted peppers. Another Simon signature---a junk food platter featuring cotton candy and gourmet versions of iconic childhood favorites like Hostess cupcakes---appears on the dessert menu and is great for sharing. But we prefer the grasshopper pie with mint chocolate chip ice cream or the twice baked banana bread with spiked caramel, malted brown sugar crunch and bourbon ice cream. The wine list offers some intriguing small producers from around the globe, and about 30 are poured by the glass.
