For more than 50 years, the Piancone family has operated a bustling Italian foods specialty shop, deli and bakery filled with fragrant, fresh-baked breads, imported cheeses and olives and platters of Grandma’s most beloved recipes. In 1992, the family went one step further and opened La Nonna Piancone’s Café right next door. Bring friends with big appetites and wear loose clothing: this is robust, hearty food served in mammoth portions. One appetizer of zesty shrimp verde, drenched in garlicky pesto, can serve four, especially paired with a loaf of crisp garlic semolina bread with melted provolone cheese. The menu is broad, with a wide range of seafood, meats, and pasta dishes, but you can’t go wrong sticking with the old-world Italian favorites that make dinner at Grandma’s such a joy.
