Located steps from Times Square, smack in the center of the tourist-trampled Theater District and several blocks from consideration by real New Yorkers, La Prima Donna offers surprisingly tasty Italian fare in a sophisticated, discrete atmosphere. Bedecked, curiously enough, with Venetian-themed art---photos of Carnival-masked men and prints of famed Venetian paintings grace the walls---the menu is distinctively Tuscan. The large-portioned, oven-roasted baby rack of lamb with sautéed root veggies is tender and hearty. The pasta dishes, particularly the angel hair with a medley of shellfish, are solidly prepared, while the classically thin-crusted pizzas are a house favorite. But it's the selection of seafood dishes, such as the poached Chilean sea bass and the pan-seared filet of Atlantic salmon on a bed of potato purée, that consistently bring down the house. In a city crammed with too many Italian restaurants, La Prima Donna doesn't necessarily stand out, but it will make you less likely to pre-judge a restaurant on its location.
