 Merlo, which earned a reputation as one of the city's most authentic Italian restaurants, morphed into a salumeria --- complete with cheese cave and imported meats like speck and prosciutto. House-made pastas continue to play an important role, however, as do the homemade sauces. The elegant front room and lively bar with imported furniture is just the tip of this lovely place. Fresh house-made pasta, cheeses and ingredients can be taken home, too, prepared and passed off as your own. Check out the affordable ($32) theater menu.
